Living Self-lessly in Body and Spirit

It can seem like a tough thing to be selfless. It's not because we don't know how to be good and how to help others. It's because the lines between self and "the other" get very thin to non-existent as you continue on the spiritual path. We're all interconnected. When I help myself, I am, in fact, helping you. Sometimes, depending on the issue, when I help myself to be happier and a more fully aware person, I'm helping you even more than if I was attempting to do the same for you. Does that make sense?
Let's take a step back. You are you, and I am me. Right? Not really. The borders of ourselves are made up for this life time. Sure, I have fun being a six foot four guy, and I totally enjoy the persona that I've created that I call Jim on a daily basis. But the more spirit becomes a part of you, the more you sense your connections to others. Intimate relationships are especially powerful because they're where we often have the fewest boundaries. You've probably heard stories about mothers who know when their children are in trouble or siblings that can communicate telepathically to each other. There are lovers who can sense each other on an energetic level. These are instances where the boundaries between the "I' and "the other" have been greatly reduced. There is a joining and a kind of union going on. This, in many respects, is where we're all heading; we're coming back to each other.
Acts of selflessness are invaluable. Donating your time to help children or a social cause are wonderful things to do. Just be careful when giving becomes giving up of your own needs. Some people give and give so much that they forget to take time to replenish themselves. Replenishing yourself and taking a moment to make sure that you're still following your heart are important pieces to this whole journey. As you grow and develop, you'll be better able to give and help others. On a spiritual level, this personal growth is also elevating the energy all around you in your relationships and in the world. In essence, you are helping to change the world because you are learning to love yourself more completely. This isn't egoic love; this is true love that comes from accepting and appreciating who you are and your right to just be. In that space, self-less living comes naturally because it's simply the way you are. And in this space, there is no difference between living for yourself and living for others.

Help

Hey, its me again. I want to take part of this a step further with you. If we are all one and healing and caring for myself = healing a part of the whole/you/everyone AND time is not really linear then I propose that healing ourselves also heals the wounds of our ancestors as well as generations who will follow us. And I think that sometimes this gets passed down through “genetics”, like some kind of disease that runs in a family; alcoholism, diabetes, depression, heart failure. Maybe when we inherit these ailments, it is an opportunity to heal something our ancestors were not able to heal. And so when we do heal whatever the cause of the ailment is, we also heal our lineage back to wherever the problem began (wherever that could possibly be).
